CFE Initiative
Goals
The South Korean government proposes the CFE Initiative, an international cooperation network to accelerate the transition to carbon free society. The CFE Initiative aims to contribute to the early achievement of the global target of carbon neutrality by using carbon free energy. This initiative will expand its role to decarbonize from industrial electricity by carbon free energy in near-term to industrial process by carbon free fuel and feedstock in the medium to long term.
Scope 2
Decarbonization of Industrial Electricity
Companies will be able to source carbon free energy and be publicly certified for their efforts, and governments will formulate favorable carbon free policies to reach NDC target. It will attract investment from companies and various forms of cross-border and cross-company collaboration to expand the use of carbon free energy.
Scope 1
Industrial Process Fuels and Feedstocks Switch
The CF Alliance plans to expand the implementation range of carbon free energy to include fuels and feedstocks used in industrial processes in the medium to long term to promote the transition to a carbon free industry. Specific examples include hydrogen-based reductions ironmaking, which replaces carbon-based reductions in the steelmaking process with hydrogen, and bio-based naphtha, which replaces petroleum-based naphtha in the petrochemical process. The CF Alliance promotes the use of carbon free fuels and feedstocks in entire industries, including the above examples.
